LINDE WAIDHOFER / WESTERN EYE

PRINTED INK-ON-PAPER

PHOTO BOOKS

BOOKS HAVE BEEN MY LIFETIME PASSION. First as a reader, then as a photographer. Like you, I don't live in a chateau with acres of wall space on which to hang hundreds of paintings and photos. But I have found that collecting art books and photo books is infinitely satisfying. And so is the creation of new photo books.

In the past, publishing a photo book meant printing a minimum of five or six thousand copies. This in turn meant that small publishers, like Western Eye, could hardly take a chance on books without a wide popular appeal. It's a brave new world today, and I am eagerly embracing new options for producing stunning new photo books. My on-demand photo books printed by Blurb.com, are simply splendid.

CHELENKO

The Thousand & One Faces of  a Patagonian Lake

108 pages, 13 x 11 inch deluxe hardbound edition

$125  — plus shipping.

Chelenko is a photographic exploration and celebration of the second largest lake in South America, the most beautiful lake that almost no one has ever heard of. Why? Because this lake is divided and shared between two countries, Chile and Argentina, in the Patagonian region of the far south. Stubbornly, each country has given their half of this magical lake a different name, Lago General Carrera on the western, Chilean side, and Lago Buenos Aires  on the eastern, Argentinian half. Chelenko is the presumptive original Indian name. By any name, a lake of stunning, breathtaking beauty.

UNKNOWN PATAGONIA

120 pages, 12 x 12 inch deluxe hardbound edition

$125 — plus shipping.

Unknown Patagonia was my first attempt to capture and share the breathtaking beauty of the northern half of Chilean Patagonia. The title is no accident because even most Chileans are unfamiliar with this strange and pristine landscape. The southern half of Patagonia, with its world famous Torres del Paine is better known, but not more beautiful. I created this book in the hopes that images of this unspoiled region would help to strengthen popular support for a campaign to preserve this Patagonian region from a destructive plan to dam all its rivers. I am so proud of the many Chileans who marched and demonstrated and eventually prevailed to save their Unknown Patagonia.

Unknown Patagonia is also available—free—as a handsome eBOOK, optimized for the iPad. as well as any computer screen. To download this eBOOK, please use the link on the main Photo Books page. I hope you will download this eBOOK and share it with friends. You will find another download link to Unknown Patagonia on my > eBOOK PAGE.

FORESTS OF LIGHT

120 pages, 13 x 11 inch hardback edition is also available for $125 — plus shipping.

Forests of Light was  a long-project, distilling the best and most personal images from over thirty years of photography among the aspen forests of the Rocky Mountains. In every season, these forests, these noble white-barked trees are breathtaking. If ever there was a poetic tree, the aspen is it. BLUE LIGHT

40 pages, 10 x 8 inch hardbound edition

$40 — plus shipping.

Blue Light was my second ‘on-demand’ book from blurb.com. It might be better described as a "monograph" than a full-sized photo book. It is a hardbound 10x8 inch volume of only 40 pages. But it showcases and celebrates one of my favorite places, the marble caverns of Patagonia, on the shore of Lago Carrera, the second largest lake in South America. These caverns and free-standing formations like the Marble Cathedral and the Marble Chapel, rising out of the crystalline turquoise waters of the lake, are simply like nothing else. The Chilean government has designated the Marble Caverns of Lago Carrera as a Santuario de la Naturaleza, or Nature Sanctuary. For me, these caves are the slot canyons of the southern hemisphere. Surreal invitations to surreal photography.

BISTI

40 pages, 13 x 11 inch hardbound edition

$80  — plus shipping.

Is the Bisti wilderness of northern New Mexico really the  surreal center of the southwest? Perhaps.… You start walking and the landscape begins to fold, crinkle, and push up in strange shapes, small at first, miniature hoodoos, micro buttes, wind sculpted sandstone, mudstone plugs, small sand-colored sand castles frozen into semi-stone, a plain full of mini-monuments, mini-mountains, growing out of the flatness, slowly growing larger as you keep walking east. Your car a fading memory.

No rangers, no trails, no visitor center. Just mystery. Pure mystery.

GOING TO THE LIGHT

40 pages, 10 x 8 inch hardbound edition

$40  — plus shipping.

Going to the Light is the visual story of a dawn flight across the Northern Ice Field of Chilean Patagonia. A landscape of pure ice, stretching from the crest of the southern Andes all the way to the Pacific: a world without people, not a soul, not a track, not a skier or a vehicle, as far away from our modern world as one can get. A world only a handful of people have ever seen

ICE/LAND

50 pages, 10 x 8 inch hardbound edition

$45  — plus shipping.

IceLand is a personal and poetic trip around this starkly beautiful island nation in the North Atlantic.

Land is not always the same as landscape. But in Iceland it is. A landscape of long views, and short distances, a minimalist landscape, empty and full at the same time, halfway between bare and barren. Here the land is solid except where it’s not, bubbling, boiling, steaming, geyser fields and places where really you shouldn’t walk, except you do. The bare bones of the earth.…
